Me along with Mr. M. A. Sattar Dulal, President of National Alliance of DPOs in Bangladesh and others meet with the Last rulling party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) 16 January 2007. We talked with the party on behalf of the PWDs of our country. We request their support and signature in the UN Convention Documents if they are re elected again. We also request for their commitment to implement all national and international rules and regulations if they pass in the upcoming national election. T

NADPO is trying to ensure the rights of PWDs in Bangladesh

Happy new Year and Eid Mobarok. you will be happy that National Alliance of Disable Peoples Organisations (NADPO) trying to ensure the political rights of PWDs in Bangladesh. For this purpose NADPO is arranging series of meeting with the political parties. Mr. M A Sattar Dulal, President of NADPO, Mr. Jahangir Alam, Secretary General of NADPO, Executive memebrs of NADPO and me are placing the following demands to the political leaders:
1. Reserve a position in the every political party’s central committee for a PWD.
2. Ensure the government signature in UN Convention document
3. Request the plitical parties to demand to the government for reserving 15 sit in the National Parliament for PWDs.
4. Include the Disability issue in the election manifesto of all political parties.
5. Make commitment to work for implementaiton of governments laws and legislation for PWDs.

NADPO have already approched with the two political parties. The first left picture says NADPO leaders are talking with the Cummunist Party of Bangladesh (CPB). and The second picture says that the NADPO leaders are talking with Jamat E Islami Bangladesh. We are trying to meet with all other political parties in Bangladesh

Printing of BMF in our Bengali Language

A Six member team including me who are the Executive member of Association for the Welfare of disable people (AWDP) translated UNESCAP Bewako Millinnium Framework (BMF) for Action into Bengali and printed it. Education ensure the basic Human Rights of Disable people

Kona was a brilliant student before class five, when she was studying at a non-formal education centre near by her house. Her mother bring her to and from school. But after the completion of class five, she was hopeless. Because, high school is very far away to attend. Kona can not walk, she is dependant on her mother to go anywhere. Dhaka PSID Centre donate her a wheelchair. Her school authority transfer Class six from first floor to ground floor. Now she is attending her school twice in week. But to enter her class room, she had to cross three stair. She and Dhaka PSID Centre requested the school authority to built up a ramp.
We think human rights can be meaningful when education is ensured. So, Kona need blessings from every side.

PWDs situation in Bangladesh

The Government of Bangladesh is providing a stipend to the PWDs monthly. I practically know this. It is true. I also get information about this from my friend Sawalak of APCD. She sent me a copy of the article which was posted by CSID. I hope you all know about it.

But the PWDs never wanted this type of stipend.

They are crying for equal rights and opportunities.

Government is giving this stipend/allowance to the PWDs at the end of their rulling time. The next National Election will be held after four month. Giving this money to PWDs means they are showing the other that, they are good.

But PWDs never wanted this type of allownace. They want barrier free access to all institution, they want barrier free communication, barrier free roads and transport and equal human rights.
Government are not giving attention to this demand. Who told the Government to give such type of allowance?

Even the Government owned National Disability Development Foundation is situated at the second floor of a building without any lift or Ramp.

I think, the government want to purchase votes showing PWDs.
This should be stopped immediately.

National Alliance of Disabled Peoples Organisations (NADPO) is organising a five day long Strategic Planning workshop from today 26th May to 30 May 2006.
Leaders of DPOs gather to BPKS Complex for the workshop. They are discussing about the constitution whether they need any change. Mr. M A Sattar Dulal who is the Chairperson of NADPO preside over the workshop. Allmost all DPO leaders attend the workshop including country representative of Action on Disability and Development (ADD) Banglades. As NADPO is a cross cutting organisation, all type of PWDs

Activity of Selfhelp organisation

Government of Bangladesh declared pension for disbaled people. BPKS is working with Self Help Organisation. The pension is distributing by the Union Parishad (Local administration of the government). Self-Help organisation leader visiteed the Union Parishod Member and requested them to distribute the Pension to the Self Help Organisation. Now, the members are distributing the pension among the PWDs member of Self-help organisation. It is on process now. I can give you the picture after distribution. Protest of negligence attitude of British Airways

I am a staff of Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Somity (BPKS) and BPKS is the member organization of Disabled Peoples Internaitonal (DPI). I am travelling from Dhaka to Stockholm to participate SIDA organised International Training Program: Human rights and Disability by British airways 6 May, 2006 with my assistant Mr. Morshad Habib. Mr. Habib is a wehhelchair user. Our flight number is BA0144. At the London Hethrow Airport, The staff of British Airways failed to delivery Mr. Habib's Wheelchair at the airport. Rather, they offered a push trolly which can not be used by disable person. Therefore, Mr. Habib can not move at the airport, can not go to toilet for four hour transit at Hethrow airport. We contacted with the station manager of British Airways. He said, sorry, But we said, sorry is not enough. We need the wheel chair at the moment. He ordered us not to shout for this and said, there are police. They will come. We are not happy about this incedent. We think our human right is violated. You seek compensation for the violation of human rights.
We informed this matter to Malin (her email is: malin.thornkvist@tranas-resebyra.se) who is our travel agent. She confirmed that, this will not happen when we are returning to our country.
But I am sorry, This is not the end. When we returning to home by 21 May 2006, we faced great porblem. Because, When Morshad Habib wanted to go to toilet, the flight Pursar Mr. King informed us that they do not have any wheel chair or easy folding chair that can bring Mr. Habib to toilet. So, Mr. Habib can not go to the toilet and he suffered a lot.

Although we informed the checking clerk at Arlanda airport that, we need this wheel chair at the gate of the aircraft when we will stay for four hours tranist time at Hethrow airport. The staff confirmed that she will try her best.
We also told the cabin crew when we enter the aircraft that we need the wheelchair at the gate site of the aircraft and they assured that could be done.
But They did not delivery our wheelchair at Hethrow airport.

Human Rights and Disability Asia 2006

During 2006 two Sida International Training Programmes on Human Rights and Disability will be organised by SHIA. The first one will target Asian participants from the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam. The course will be held at Almåsa conference centre between the 8th and 19th of May 2006. The closing date for applying is November 15th 2005.

The second course will target participants from the MENA region- Middle East and Northern Africa from the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank and Gaza, Yemen. The course will be held at Almåsa conference centre between the 4th and 15th of September 2006. The closing date for applying is March 15th 2006.

The programme aims at enhancing knowledge, develop methods and tools, and to provide a foundation for future networking and co-operation and will include:

An overview of the existing Human Rights instruments and discussions on how these can be used to improve life conditions for persons with disabilities.
An opportunity to exchange experiences and opinions concerning the drafting of the new UN “Convention on Disability” and the future role of the UN Standard Rules and the proposed additions.
An analysis of Poverty Reduction Strategies and other multilateral programmes and how disability aspects can be included. Methods and skills needed to influence these processes. Discussions around poverty and human rights from a disability perspective.
Exchange of experience of how persons with disabilities and their organisations can increase their participation in the development of policies.
Introduction to Swedish disability policy, legislation and social services, including study visits to relevant Swedish authorities, institutions and organisations.

Issues such as gender, children and hiv/aids in relation with persons with disabilities will be included within all topics.

The programme is targeting participants from regional or national DPOs, government agencies and NGOs working in the area of Human Rights and disability. Persons with disabilities have been especially encouraged to apply.

The programme organiser is SHIA - the Swedish Organisations’ of Disabled Persons International Aid Association.
